The PhD course in Advanced Studies of Design, Innovation and Sustainability Culture fits into the context of the objectives outlined by the European scenarios, such as the UN SDGs, the Next Generation EU and the Green Deal, as well as the Italian national plans (PNR and PNRR). It responds to the growing demand for advanced training in the fields of design and sustainability, integrating complex knowledge and formulating multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral research themes. This PhD aims to develop advanced and transversal skills to address contemporary challenges related to sustainability, promoting an innovative and integrated approach to design. The programme focuses on creating sustainable solutions in industrial and social contexts, responding to the competitiveness needs and economic and social impact of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Italy.
Research areas include sustainable design, innovation in production processes and the integration of a culture of sustainability into production and consumption systems. In addition, it explores the psychology of housing, analyzing how the built environment affects the psychological well-being of individuals, where design is seen as a fundamental driver for innovation, able to transfer research and knowledge into manufactures and services. SMEs, which represent the backbone of the Italian economy, need a strengthening of the production chain through research areas aimed at supporting their competitiveness. This PhD aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills, promoting the widespread implementation of innovation dynamics.
The interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach of the programme allows to explore unexploited potential for economic growth, benefiting from the connection between research, territories, stakeholders, enterprises and human capital, Publishing plays a crucial role as a means of dissemination, making research results accessible and promoting an informed dialogue between academia and society. The PhD course promotes a new attitude towards cooperation and interaction between supply and demand, developed in a context of reciprocity and circularity. This facilitates listening to innovation needs and promotes substantial progress in processes, products and services in line with international strategic objectives.
The integration of artificial intelligence into research projects is an additional factor for innovation, enabling advanced data analysis and the creation of intelligent and adaptive solutions. By integrating research activities and advanced training, doctoral candidates will be able to develop original research projects that respond to contemporary needs, contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable future.
